Combat soil erosion: 252457
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions and improve on them.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A list is made of the techniques that are currently available.
· Gabion baskets
· branches
· active seeding
· Contour line
· Biomac soil blankets:
· stone packing
· Cladding
· Windbreakers
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A detailed explanatory note is written on each of these techniques.
Gabion baskets: It is packed together. Rocks is placed it a mental basket, and then the basket is placed where the erosion is taking place. The rock slow water down and all the materials. So the ground slowly starts to grow plants again.
Branches: Can be packet into a gully. The branches cover the soil surface and traps the soil under the branches.
Active seedling: Seeds that grow fast can be planted. Then grasses survive in difficult condition. They break the seed of water that run off. They protect the soil against the wind and the seed banks.
Contour line: To protect the erosion you can use a strait pipe or something to put it with the contour line not against it because it can cause erosion.
Biomac soil blankets: Natural degradable blankets are placed over which protect the soil.
Stone packing: Use rocks on erosion lines. So that the water can go slowly rather than fast. So that the organic materials can go slowly against the stones and start growing.
Cladding: Where you put a net over to protect the organic material. So if the wind is hard it can blow but it would not blow all away.
Windbreakers: Can be planted by using trees and shrubs in areas where erosion by the wind is a main factor.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A summary is given of the techniques that were found to work best under particular conditions.
So you did all the information about all the techniques you can do to overcome erosion. So know you choice one from all the information you did of all the techniques.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Lessons learned are noted in order to apply these to future practice.
So you put or build a technique you choice and later if you see that technique don’t work to good and you put something extra there to see if it work. So that you think it is the best. It is how you learn about all the techniques you use and what you still can use with it.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
A report on remedial actions taken is given and possible aspects for improvement are identified. Wrote a report about what you did and all about the positive and negative you did and didn’t get/do. Like a deep brief basis.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Assistance is rendered in the rehabilitation of selected areas by planting grass and/or other forms of vegetation as appropriate. It is where you can use other options at selected areas by planting grass or trees to help erosion overcome rather than putting branches over.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Implement systems of remediation and report on them.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Assistance is rendered in planning, organizing and implementing remediation. First you have to plan, organize and implementing before you do anything. If you don’t plan and just start it can cause problems because you didn’t do research.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A report is prepared outlining the problem and the proposed solution.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The signs of erosion, possible causes, and extent of erosion as well as remedial actions taken. Know you have all of you information about what the problem is and what the solution is. So know you can write it on a report to show that you did research and you have a solution of the erosion problem.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Suggestions are made on possible remedial intervention actions.
Make sure that there is a person with that is involving with the task. And that if there is a problem that he will have a plan b.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Control erosion through taking appropriate remedial action in the long and short term.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Interventions are implemented that are aimed at controlling the causes of erosion in the particular area. First you must do research before taking any actions: E.g. Site visit Pitting Seeding Branching
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A selection is made of techniques appropriate to the problem.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Gabion baskets, branches, water bars and barriers, active seeding, capping, contouring, erosion reclamation, boardwalks, stone packing, brush packing, cladding. Know you choice a technique to overcome the problem. But first you must know what is you budget? Do you have man power? Do you have equipment and tools?
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The techniques employed are justified in terms of ecological principles.
The technique you choice do you know if it can work to the problem of erosion? Did you do research about it? Or have you already tray it and know if it work All of this options you must know before starting anything.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Detect and explain the causes of erosion.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A determination is made of the causes of soil erosion in terms of the likely factors.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
New road, rutting by vehicles, trampling, overgrazing, bush encroachment, deforestation, aforestation, fire, environmentally inappropriate use of resources, roads, runoff. Identify the problems of what is happening. And identify the cause of the problem. E.g. The wire line between each farm. The other farm spray poison on the fire breaks so the grass would not grow. But in year time they would have erosion problems. Or Water, Snow, Wind can remove the top soil and cause soil erosion.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The precise nature of the damage done is specified with a view to stopping or limiting soil erosion.
So you identify the problem now you must view how you gone stop the problem of erosion.
E.g.
Did you lose topsoil? And how many did you lost?
Do you have any Road erosion?
You need to quantify it first.
Yield / hec?
Did you lost any product?
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Detect soil erosion sites.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
| Accurate observations are carried out for the purpose of detecting the following signs of soil erosion at a site.
You must know the purpose of detecting the signs of soil erosion at a site. E.g. Where: Springbok flak? ; What is happening? : Overgrazing, No grass, Open patches? Topsoil- It’s a dark color. Gulies- Is there or not. Runoff shape or harden areas-Where, is it hard or a runoff shape. |
