Flora:
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify the species or specimen(s) to be harvested.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The correct harvest site is found within a reasonable amount of time.
The place where you can found the specie you want or have. E.g. Limpopo Waterberg Sondela. And that you just only have a reasonable amount of time to get it for the dealer that put you up to the job to get it.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The relevant species or specimen(s) to be harvested is identified.
The specific specie you choice you must know it identifying of it. How you can use it and what for. Also what else you can do to sell it, to get good money. Must also know what type of plants you can’t use that is protected species or medicinal plants.
E.g. Sekelbush: Can be use for selling to make fire:
* E.g. Bring and braai
* E.g. kaggel
*E.g. Bags for chalets – Small bag or Big bag.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The precise location of the relevant species or specimen(s) is determined.
So know you know where it can be found and what kind of specie it is. So you must know where in that specific area you found it where you can cut. An area where bush encroachment is.
E.g. At a camp that is far from the normal big farm. Because it is far and if a fire breaks out it can’t spread too far it you can handle it.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Relevant species are correctly identified by sight.
The workers that work for you, that cut the bush or tree, you must show them which kind of trees/bush they must cut and can’t cut. You must show in detail and not too many, if they finished with all of what you show you must show them the rest also in detail and where. Because they are not there to know trees, they are there just to cut.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Species is identified in the language of harvesters.
When you have workers you must know what kind of language they speak, and then you must find out what that kind of species name it is in their language so that they know and maybe they will know that kind of specie in their language and not in other kind of language.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Carry out the harvesting process.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Appropriate harvesting techniques are selected to ensure compliance with organisational procedures and the requirements of relevant legislation.
It is how you will do it, what kind of equipment you are going to use and not use. Also the time you gone take to do the task.
E.g. The chainsaw: For sekelbush.
Or
Circular tables saw: After you cut it from the trees you use it to cut it in half or neat that it can fit in.
Etc.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The harvesting of flora is conducted according to organisational and legislative procedures.
You must know the legal requirements of anything you cut or remove.
Also know the medicinal plants; people that is traditional they go and use this plants for medicine or something else, this why we must go and look at it. Everything must have permission.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Correct species are harvested in the correct locality by means of the correct method.
You must have the correct specie on the right locality on the correct method. If something is not in place you can get big problems. E.g. if you cut the wrong tree/bush you can get a fine.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Harvesting is carried out according to occupational health and safety procedures.
OHS is very important for you, your people and your workplace. If you use equipments you must know how to use it, e.g. training and experience. Otherwise you can cut yourself or get problems if you don’t know how to use it.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Supervise the harvesting process where conducted by authorised temporary harvesters.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Steps are taken to ensure that the agreed-to 'rules of harvest' are effectively communicated and upheld.
The rules of harvest are effectively communicated and upheld. You must know when to harvest, what to harvest, how to harvest. You must know the site, location, time, season, specie and quantity of everything. Harvested contractor- Needs to be upheld.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Provisions are made for the adequate care of temporary harvesters.
Temporary harvesters: They need shelter to life in.
Transport to get to shelter or other locations where they need to work.
Need water /food when they are working.
Also medical for in case something happen.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Steps are taken to ensure that harvesters remain in the general area of harvest.
When you have temporally harvesters they must follow the rules, because if they don’t they will do what they want and more problems can happen. And they must stay in the general harvest area. So you must have steps to insure nothing cud happen.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The harvesting process is supervised in such a manner that sound human relations are maintained at all times.
The harvesting process is supervised by having rules and contracts. E.g. No swearing, No sexually abused, No verbally abused and must have human rights.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Record, report and reflect on the harvest.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The harvest is measured in a practical, efficient and timeous manner.
The harvest must be measured, to know how you gone sell it. . It also depends on how much time you have to do it.
e.g. The fire wood in bags – small or big. Or a load of branches. Or thatch grass in bundles. Etc.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The harvest is accurately weighed according to the standard weighing system prescribed for each species by the employer/landowner.
How much it weight to see how much weight you sell in a week or month or year.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The harvest is recorded in the format required by operational procedures (that is, accurately recorded using the system prescribed by the employer/landowner).
Must record what en where you cut. Because if you don’t and years later you wonder why that side is bushy you think back and try to remember but can’t. So it is important you record because you will know when to cut again or not. Can put it on excel.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
A harvest report is prepared containing all the information required to maintain a harvest management system.
All off the information must be reported to maintain a harvest management system, so that you and your manager wood know what happened and why it happened. So when they are checking what happened on the end of the month or year to see what was the most problem maybe they can fix it. So when they do fix it they can see if their problem solving worked.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Lessons learnt are identified and built into plans for future harvesting.
What lessons did you and your people learned. You must have a better plan for the future harvesting. To do it better the next time.
